The cliffside town of Weehawken has become one of the region’s most desirable places to live and work. Situated between Hoboken to the south and West New York to the north, the waterfront town offers Manhattan views and a quick commute into the city as well as a lifestyle that is attracting developers and new residents alike.
Weehawken has taken significant steps towards its redevelopment in the last few decades, particularly along the waterfront. As the town’s Licensed Site Remediation Professional (LSRP) since 2014, Atlantic Environmental Solutions Inc. (AESI) has been providing Weehawken with a range of environmental consulting and engineering services. This expertise has paved the way for redevelopment efforts at many of Weehawken’s former industrial sites and has allowed the town to untap the full potential of these underutilized properties. These projects have brought new life and activity to Weehawken while contributing to the town’s economic success.
AESI’s involvement in Weehawken is ongoing, and indicative of the scope of work the firm does on behalf of municipalities at the local and state level. Currently, AESI is playing a pivotal role in a major expansion to the town’s Waterfront Recreational Area, ensuring that this piece of property is redeveloped in accordance with all necessary NJDEP (NJ Department of Environmental Protection) requirements. Plans call for the area to be upgraded with an extension to the south that will include three pools and an ice-skating rink/multipurpose pavilion.
When this project is completed – together with Weehawken’s existing recreational waterfront areas – the town will have a total of 15.5 acres of continuous active and passive recreation space along the Hudson River. Funding for the project is being provided by waterfront developer fees; the State of New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection Green Acres Program; and the Hudson County Open Space Trust Fund.
AESI’s expert testimony on behalf of the municipality has been vitally important to this and other development efforts here. The firm’s leadership provides expert testimony and litigation support on multiple environmental matters at forums including trials, mediation, municipal boards and depositions. Cases typically involve the remediation and cleanup of contaminated property in order to ready the property for its upcoming redevelopment and reuse.
The firm’s recent endeavors at the Waterfront Recreational Area involved ensuring impacted soil is appropriately remediated and meets the state’s requirements for clean fill. The process required piling about 40,000 cubic yards of new soil to both compact the existing loose soil and raise the level of the soil where needed to meet current floodplain standards. The new soil set for a few months and is being removed under AESI’s oversight.
When it comes to addressing soil issues, expert LSRP services are critical to saving time and money by characterizing soils and fill material in accordance with applicable regulations and allowing for the reuse of site soils rather than disposing them offsite. This provides developers with a cost-effective method to address these “cut and fill” issues.
Whether the municipal project involves environmental assessments, site remediation, long-term monitoring, brownfield redevelopment, or sustainability planning, AESI develops innovative, responsive and cost-effective solutions that improve the quality of life for communities and their residents.
